Event Overview

Building empathy in students can be important within a variety of disciplines, particularly professional roles within allied health and education. Attempts to build student empathy that do not attend to dynamics of cultural differences and oppression can run the risk of promoting false empathy that serve the voyeuristic purpose of the student rather than achieving accurate empathy for others. This presentation will center on the differences between true and false empathy, and how racial identity can impact classroom dynamics and the ability to engage in cultural empathy. A model for cultural empathy training will be presented.
