The Florida CourseShare award recognizes faculty for their willingness to support innovative collaboration across the State University System. Florida CourseShare faculty allow course materials that they created to be shared to Canvas Commons so that other instructors can adapt them for course development. Pioneer Contributers
Melanie Veige
Senior Lecturer, Director of General Chemistry
Department of Chemistry
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Melanie Veige is a Senior Lecturer and Director of General Chemistry in the department of chemistry. She enjoys creating highly structured, engaging materials for largely introductory level chemistry courses. She has lately turned her skills to revising and iteratively updating the general chemistry lab manuals, both for residential students and for UF Online (boot camp). Melanie contributed the course CHM1020 Chemistry for the Liberal Arts to the Florida CourseShare initiative.
Robert DeSerio, Ph.D.
Director of Instructional Laboratories
Department of Physics
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Dr. Robert DeSerio is the Director of Instructional Laboratories for the Department of Physics. He enjoys creating experiments for the introductory and advanced physics lab courses. All work is geared toward quantitative, experiment-based learning of physics concepts. He has recently extended these efforts to experiments students can perform at home using their personal computers with wi-fi connected sensors and inexpensive parts kits. "Physics is an experimental science and the Introductory Physics Laboratory courses submitted for the CourseShare initiative were designed so students could perform real experimentation. From constructing their equipment, taking and analyzing data, and reporting on the results, all work can be done at home using personal computers with a wi-fi enabled data acquisition device and carefully chosen parts assembled for the purpose. Such courses are particularly valuable when on-campus meetings are not an option, such as for online students or during the current pandemic." Robert contributed the course Applied Physics Lab suitable for PHY2048L, PHY2049L, PHY2053L and PHY2045L to the Florida CourseShare initiative.
Shawn Weatherford, Ph.D.
Lecturer
Department of Physics
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Dr. Shawn Weatherford is a Lecturer in the Department of Physics. His focus is the design of technology to provide students agency to create authentic artifacts representing their learning of physics. This includes students writing computer programs to model physical systems and the collection of authentic data to make sense of physical relationships utilizing quantitative reasoning. "Physics faculty strongly value the outcomes provided by lab experiences to engage student learning communities in the decision-making process involving the collection and analysis of authentic data. Bob DeSerio's lab experiments have been tested over multiple semesters and represent a lab curriculum that can be utilized in part or as a whole at any institution in the SUS, without needing to start from a blank slate. The lab suite provides both a collection of lab experiments and an instructional model that can be used to deliver a rigorous online lab experience." Shawn contributed the course Applied Physics Lab suitable for PHY2048L, PHY2049L, PHY2053L and PHY2045L to the Florida CourseShare initiative.
