Focus on Skills
- Career competencies carry significant weight in hiring practices
- There are discrepancies between what employers want and how they perceive the readiness of recent graduates.
- While GPA still matters, it is less of a vital ingredient to the hiring recipe
- Career is Degree + Experience + Credentials.
Flexible workforce
- Many career trajectories are varied and non-linear. Employees often shift employers, job types and descriptions, and accrue an array of skills as they grow.
- Employers value employees who are willing and able to learn new skills on the job
Keeping Up with Industry Trends
- It can be useful to have some awareness of what’s happening in the industries your students commonly look to for their careers. Hiring patterns, job titles or shifts, major disruptions, and other such trends will help you support your students as the build their skills and experiences.
