Learn about teaching best practices and campus resources that will help you get up to speed quickly. By completing this workshop, you will earn 250 miles towards your Passport to Great Teaching certificate of participation. The estimated time to complete the full workshop is 4-5 hours (depending upon your choice of optional modules).
- For access, complete the registration form.
- Complete four required modules plus choose one of four optional modules to earn your certificate of completion.
- Submit a reflection in the Passport Portal by clicking on Submit Activity and selecting Be a GREAT Online or Hybrid TA in the dropdown menu.
- If you don’t have a Passport Portal account, create one.
- This workshop is required for graduate assistants supporting UF Online courses.
Workshop Outline
Module 1: Quality Interaction
- Identify good practice for quality interactions with your students in an online or face-to-face setting
- Determine methods of communication to serve your students’ needs
- Evaluate and then create office hour practices that meet student needs
- Identify strategies to help survive your first classroom experience as a teaching assistant
Module 2: Reciprocity and Cooperation
- Identify the elements of quality online and face-to-face discussion
- Create strategies to keep students engaged in online or face-to-face discussion
Module 3: Active Learning
- Identify active learning assignments in your course
- Examine strategies for facilitating collaborative learning
- Reflect on how you will incorporate active learning into classroom interactions as a teaching assistant
Module 4: Prompt Feedback
- Outline feedback best practices
- Identify the types of feedback that will be needed in your course
- Describe the time management strategies best suited to your needs
Module 5: Time on Task
- Explore student motivation and the role of the instructor in this process
- Identify campus resources that can help students with time management and study skills
Module 6: Respect Diverse Talents
- Identify the features of an inclusive environment
- Match potential student challenges with possible support
- Determine possible responses to interpersonal challenges among students
Module 7: Expertise in Subject and Teaching
- Explore what it means to be a reflective teacher
- Describe professionalism in teaching
- Identify professional development resources at UF
