Retooling Assessment:
Making Learning Visible in an AI World

A collaborative initiative from AI² Center, UFIT CITT, and the Center for Teaching Excellence

Let’s be honest: you didn’t become an educator to spend hours grading assignments that don’t truly measure what your students have learned. You entered this profession to help students grow, think critically, and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Yet somewhere along the way, many of us found ourselves trapped in assessment practices that feel disconnected from these deeper goals.

Here’s what we’ve discovered: assessment challenges aren’t new, and AI didn’t break our evaluation systems—it simply highlighted what wasn’t working. This presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to step back and ask the fundamental questions: What are we really trying to measure? How can we design assessments that genuinely support student learning? And how do we prepare our students for a world where AI is a collaborative tool, not a threat?

We’re inviting you to join a university-wide conversation about retooling assessment—not just to address AI concerns, but to create evaluation practices that are more meaningful, authentic, and aligned with what we know about effective learning.

Throughout this initiative, we’ll dive into the topics that matter most for 21st-century assessment:

Transparency and Student Engagement: How TILT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) principles can transform student buy-in and help learners understand the purpose behind your assessments.

Alternative Grading Approaches: Explore ungrading, team-based assessment, competency-based evaluation, and standards-based grading that focus on learning rather than sorting.

Authentic Assessment Design: Move beyond traditional exams and papers toward hands-on, real-world evaluations that mirror professional practice.

Future-Ready Evaluation: Design assessments that prepare students for an AI-integrated workplace while maintaining academic integrity.

Scaling Meaningful Assessment: Practical strategies for large enrollment courses that need efficient yet authentic evaluation methods.

Student Perspectives on AI: Understand how students actually use AI tools and design policies that support rather than punish learning.

Feedback That Matters: Create assessment experiences that provide meaningful, growth-oriented feedback rather than just grades.

AI Literacy Development: Help both yourself and your students develop critical competencies for working alongside artificial intelligence.

Lifelong Learning and Mentoring: Foster a culture of continuous growth by designing assessment practices that encourage reflection, adaptability, and self-directed learning.

We understand that everyone has varying time commitments and learning preferences, so we’ve designed multiple ways for you to participate:

Quick Exploration (30 minutes): Jump into a Teaching Spark—focused, online sessions that explore one practical idea you can implement immediately.

Ongoing Learning (Asynchronous): Access our Resource Library with updated guides, templates, and tools, or listen to podcast episodes featuring faculty success stories and practical strategies.

Monthly Deep-Dives (1 hour): Attend Tech Bytes for hands-on exploration of specific assessment tools and techniques, or join workshops for collaborative skill-building.

Conference Learning: Participate in assessment-focused sessions at AI Days, the AI² SummitInterface and Teaching TechXploration events.

Reimagining Assessments: Making Learning Visible in the Age of AI Faculty Learning Community to completely redesign your assessment approach while collaborating with colleagues and developing sharable resources for the broader UF community.
