The Great Online Course workshop series is designed to save you time with practical suggestions and planning resources for your online course development. You’ll start your course creation as you go through these workshops. If you’re teaching an online course that has already been created, you may move directly to the Teach a Great Online Course workshop.

Design a Great Online Course (Revised for 2022!)

This workshop will walk you through the planning stages of creating an online course. Practical how-to guidance coupled with “create-your-course” worksheets will help you move through your course development efficiently. While the Design workshop is at-your-own-pace, your facilitator is available through Zoom, email, or discussion forum to answer questions and provide feedback. Coupled with the strategies from Design and Build workshops, this course will guide you towards earning Quality, High Quality or Exemplary recognition for you and your course. By completing this workshop and submitting a reflection in the Passport Portal, you will earn 150 miles towards your Passport to Great Teaching certificate.

When you complete this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Plan your online course using “backward design.”
  2. Identify features of quality course design using the UFQ Standards.
  3. Align your course objectives, assessments, content and learning activities to create a course map.
  4. Experience an online course from the student’s perspective.
  5. Estimate the time it will take you to create the content for one module.

Time Commitment

This workshop is required for instructors who are developing or revising an online course for UF Online. Expect to spend approximately 7.5 hours reviewing the materials and completing the worksheets.

Build a Great Online Course

This workshop picks up where Design a Great Online Course left off and continues through the initial stages of building online course materials. Coupled with the strategies from the Design and Teach workshops, this course will guide you towards earning Quality, High Quality or Exemplary recognition for you and your course. By completing this workshop and submitting a reflection in the Passport Portal, you will earn 200 miles towards your Passport to Great Teaching certificate.

When you complete this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Use the UF  Quality standards to identify the features of a quality online course. (canvas login required)
  2. Identify technology needs to support your course objectives and activities.
  3. Describe good practice for technology usage.

This workshop is designed to be completed in approximately five hours.

Build a Great Online Course Registration

Teach a Great Online Course

This workshop will save you time by providing you with useful strategies for teaching your online course. Coupled with the strategies from Design and Build workshops, this course will guide you towards earning Quality, High Quality or Exemplary recognition for you and your course. This workshop is also designed as standalone support for instructors who are taking over a course that was developed by another faculty member. By completing this workshop and submitting a reflection in the Passport Portal, you will earn 150 miles towards your Passport to Great Teaching certificate.

As you move through the workshop, you will create the following resources for your course:

  1. Notes on how the UF Quality standards apply to your course in these areas:
    1. Instructor Team Presence
    2. Community and Relationships
    3. Feedback
  2. Personal introduction message
  3. Communication plan
  4. Weekly task checklist

Teach a Great Online Course Registration

This workshop series will familiarize you with the new (as of spring, 2018) UF Quality standards. These research-based practices are part of the Florida QM Fundamentals Course Review process. Upon institutional review, online courses may earn a Quality or High Quality designation. These designations will appear in the Florida Virtual Campus course listing.

This workshop is required for instructors who are developing or revising an online course for UF Online.
